First Day of School!

Duval County public schools started their 2010-2011 school year this morning and San Marco experienced the typical first day traffic patterns that reminds everyone that school is back in session. Hendricks Avenue Elementary has had a changing of the guard in it’s administration, welcoming new principal Robert “B.R.” Rhoads, and assistant principal, Charlene McEarl. Here is an excerpt from Mr. Rhoads comments on the Hendricks website, “As the new principal at Hendricks, I feel honored to have been selected to serve as leader of such an outstanding school. You can expect that I will greet each day with an optimistic spirit and that all decisions will be made based on what is in the best interest of students and what will move them forward in their learning! I will strive to empower others and serve as an exemplary role model, care giver, and mentor.”

Studio K Dance Family Night at Pizza Palace!

Starting tonight! Invite your friends and family to the San Marco Pizza Palace every 1st and 2nd Thursday of the month from 4:30-9:00pm. When you pay for your meal tell them you support Studio K Dance and they will donate 15% of the total bill to the Studio K Dance Company Dancers for their national competition in July 2011.

« Kristen Howe and Emily Iannotti will be dancing at the FSU School of Dance Summer Intensive Workshop under the instruction of an amazing faculty lead by Sheila Humphreys and Lynda Davis.

« Addie Higgins will be dancing at the prestigious Young Dancer Summer Workshop at the American Ballet Theatre in NYC. This workshop provides the opportunity for serious young dancers, ages 9-11, to actively flourish in a professional environment. Under the direction of Franco De Vita, Principal of ABT’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School, the outstanding faculty members of ABT will provide unparalleled instruction.

« Jackie Sullivan has a very busy summer ahead of her…first starting at the Sarasota Ballet Summer Intensive and then following up at the City Ballet of San Diego. Jackie will be receiving instruction from the amazing David Howard and Gelsey Kirkland at the City Ballet of San Diego.

« Rachel Jimenez will have an extremely demanding summer, starting with a week at Complexions in NYC under the direction of the remarkable Desmond Richardson and Dwight Rhoden. Following that with three weeks at the celebrated Julliard School of Dance Summer Intensive! Finishing her hectic summer with study at Joffrey Jazz and Contemporary in NYC! WOW!

Hendricks Avenue Baseball League Advanced 10U Green and Gold Teams prevailed through the scorching heat and rainstorms to victory this weekend. Coach Adrian Rust, the teams organizer, encourages the players to go out and play a good game but always reminds them to have fun.

Sunday evening Gold Heat returned to the field after a rain delay to win the San Souci 10U baseball tournament. In the final game, they came back from being six runs down after the top of the 1st inning to win 11 to 9. All of the players were outstanding and worked like a machine to capture the tournament win. Congratulations to Gavin Carter, David Rivera-Clapp, Jack Cromer, Brantley DeWitt, Austin Evans, Henry Jacqmein, Maguire Kelly, Brian Koehler, Donovan LaFavor, Joseph Mansour, Zak Shapiro, Dawson Wakefield and Beau Wood.

Gold Heat captures the trophy!

Green Heat made H.A.B. history Monday night as they defeated Julington Creek and then San Jose to win the championship by stringing together five consecutive victories over the big parks. Congratulations to Ethan Anderson, Jay Babcock, Jacob Becker, Trevor Chisholm, Will Leavitt, Zach Locke, Alan Meyer, John Najem, T.J. O’Kelley, Ethan Renaud, Caleb Rolison, Logan Rust, and Alex Salvador.

Green Heat celebrates the win!

Hendricks Elementary – Sunshine Math

Sunshine Math is a voluntary math program hosted at Hendricks Avenue Elementary. Each year, Hendricks hosts a local competition to select a winner for each grade level. For grades 1 through 5, the winners were Robert R, Andrew L, Meredith A, Christina L, and Jade H. These students went on to compete in a math competition against other children in their grade level from other schools. Congratulations to all the student participants and especially to Meredith A. who placed 1^st in 3^rd grade at the District Competition held at Wolfson High School on Thursday, May 13.

Landon Students Learn About Communiy Service

Chase Turknett and Emeritus Resident

Landon sixth grade students completed a community service project last month for Emeritus Assisted Living Facility in Mandarin. Miss Franklin’s Language Arts students got together after school to assemble Easter baskets filled with lots of goodies. The students also wrote “thinking of you” notes to include in the baskets.

Chase Turknett and Mrs. Turknett delivered the baskets on March 29^th to the delight of the residents of Emeritus. They were greeted with smiles and thank you’s from the residents. It was heartwarming to brighten the elderly residents day.

Raingutter Regatta 2010

San Marco Preservation Society held its annual Raingutter Regatta on Saturday April 17th at Colonial Manor Lake Park. The North Florida O.R.C.A.S. were also in attendance to demonstrate their many and varied remote control boats. The competitors and spectators alike, enjoyed the chamber of commerce weather. In the K-2nd grade division, Robert Ritchie placed first with Linkin and Corbin Bradshaw coming in second and third respectively. Linkin also received a design award. In the 3rd-5th grade division, the team of Jake Thiele and Dalton Golden placed first. John Martin was second and Grace Woodward placed third. Olivia Bogan was awarded Best Design. Other design awards were given to Arthur Shuppe, Flynn Stapleton, Anna Schuppe, Regan Foote, and Matteo Turra. Brittney Strong won the SMPS raffle. HobbyTown USA provided the prize, a R/C sailboat valued at $200.00.

Scientists of Tomorrow at Landon Today

Twenty-one students from Julia Landon Middle School participated in the Northeast Florida Regional Science & Engineering Fair (NEFRSEF) held at UNF on February 22nd. The students who placed first and second in the school science fair were selected to showcase their projects at the regional event. An impressive array of science projects aimed to prove scientific theories and phenomenons in the areas of chemistry, engineering, environmental science, and physics to name a few.

Over 350 middle and high school students from Duval County took part in the event. Three Landon students were recognized for their outstanding projects. Ben Lassley placed second in chemistry for “How Do Acids Effect the Creation of Iron Oxide”; Regan Foote placed third in chemistry for ‘The Effect of Time on the Amount of Chlorine in Household Tap Water”; and Julia Silliman placed second in biochemistry for “The Effect of PH on the Strength of Collagen”.

The mission of NEFRSEF is to promote, encourage and support scientific and engineering learning endeavors for middle and high school students. Congratulations to all of the Landon students who participated in the regional event– Emily Alesch, JC Boers, Jesse Evans, Brianna Fleming, Regan Foote, Isabella G., Ben Lassley, Sean Mangum, Kathryn McMullen, Hazel Odell, Ben Pippins, Steven Pisarchuk, Ashton Putnal, Alphonso Robinson, Julia Silliman, Cole S., Sophia Rappaport, Raveen Selvakumar, Kailyn Waldeck, Audrey Ware and Emily Waters.

Local Schools Perform Well at City Chess Championship

Hendricks Avenue Elementary and Julia Landon College Prep competed with 120 of the city’s top scholastic chess players in the “Jacksonville Scholastic Chess Championship” held at Jacksonville Country Day School. Hendricks Avenue placed 3rd over-all and Julia Landon placed second overall just one point out of 1st. Former Hendricks Avenue student, Sam Kenney, led his Bolles team to a 1st place finish in the middle school division. Sam also place 1st in the individual competition & is now the reigning city champ in the middle school division. Ian McNeil place 3rd overall in the 3-5 grade division. Congratulations to all of the San Marco students for their outstanding performance this year.

Ready, Set, Build

Only one week left to register for MOSH’s Lego Competition 2010. All entries are due by Tuesday, January 19th. The competition will be held on January 23, 2010. Competitors must bring their own legos and complete their structures within the 3.5 hour build time. Chaperons and parents are not allowed to help in the building of the structure. The competition is open to children in kindergarten through ninth grade. Winners from each category will recieve $100 MOSH gift cards. All entries will be on display at MOSH from January 23 to February 21, 2010. Visit the MOSH web site to register today.
