Art and music collide tonight at Square One, host of the Winter 2011 Art “Friends” Electric party. Dozens of local artists will showcase their works upstairs and down all night while dj Wes Reed and Matt Caulder drop indie electro dance beats. Standard cover charge will be waved if you pre-register online. Artists exhibiting tonight include Jay Peele, Matt Nelson, Faith Bennett, and Red Met Yellow Collective.

Football season is over, it has been raining for days, Valentine’s is not until next week. What are we supposed to do this weekend? Yes it s only Tuesday and we are already looking forward to the weekend. And with good reason; Square One is resurrecting the 70s the is Saturday night. 70s disco band the Boogie Freaks and a costume contest for the best 70s garb.

Put away the rain boots and dust off your boogie shoes. it’s time to get down with your bad self.

At 9:00, the D.J. spun tunes while models for local boutiques Rosie True, Therapie, and Reve, made final preparations for their walk down Square One’s “runway” for a fashion show.  The club’s staircase was the perfect place to make an entrance. People gathered on the main floor to watch as the models descended, gorgeous in hair, beautifully made up, and dressed in lovely clothes.  They modeled the most current of casual, and special occasion wear from each of the three San Marco boutiques.

At about 10:00, local Jacksonville band KLOB started to play; the lights were dimmed, the dance floor filling up right way.  People were swaying to the music while the lighting pulsed about the room.  It was a full house for Square One, black and white balloons festooning the main floor, indicating this was no ordinary Saturday night. Ten years in San Marco, Square One is a favorite spot for nightlife in town.  Some of the people in the house told us that they come in for a drink several times a week.  It’s a place that has both a club vibe, and to many, is a familiar place in the neighborhood for regular stop-ins.  Congratulations to Square One for being an integral part of the community for a decade!
