On the heals of the installation of the city’s first planned bioswale at San Marco Branch Library in mid-December, you’re invited to help recognize Florida Arbor Day with some very special activities. The bioswale, an eco-friendly drainage system that cleans runoff and keeps pollutants away from city drainage before they enter the river, was installed last month. In keeping with the eco-awarenesws at San Marco Branch, Greenscape of Jacksonville is coordinating with the City of Jacksonville to plant shade trees that will take the place of trees recently removed from the library’s property due to disease. The planting will take place on Florida’s Arbor Day, Friday, January 20, and will include both the planting and a presentation by Larry Figar, Urban Forester, University of Florida Cooperative Extension Service, on “The Value of Trees.” His discussion will cover not only the aesthetic benefits of trees but also the economic impact of a healthy tree canopy for a community and its citizens. The first 50 guests will receive a free seedling. the planting ceremony begins at 10:45 a.m. and will be followed by the presentation in the library’s meeting room at 11 a.m.
