At last month’s Town Hall Meeting, Scott Trebatoski , Director of Animal Care and Control, addressed the concerns of residents regarding the increase in diseased raccoons throughout the Southside. Scott noted that the symptoms were characteristic of distemper and that natural outbreaks occur in wild animal populations. The disease is transmissible to cats and dogs and he encouraged residents to make sure their pet’s vaccinations are up to date. Animal Care and Control WILL NOT pick up diseased raccoons as they could spread the disease throughout the shelter. At this time, if you wish to have a wild animal removed from your property, you must call a private company and there are several in Jacksonville.
